About DLC coated end mill cutter, one of the questions is how does it affect the sharpness of the cutting lips in the front lips & along the flute lips? Especially when machining aluminum.

Different shapes:
- Flat end mill: the outer diameter is relatively loose, and the cutter teeth are spiral.
- Keyway milling cutter: keyway milling cutter has a small helix angle, groove depth, approximate straight-line folding back, which is a little similar to a twist drill. Generally, there are only two cutter teeth, and the blade of the end cutter teeth extends to the center, which is like both a flat end milling cutter and a drill bit.
Different performance:
- Flat end mill: the flat end milling cutter not only has single tooth but also has two teeth, four teeth, etc. the side edge cutting is stable and the efficiency is high. Moreover, the outer diameter of the flat end milling cutter is relatively loose, which is usually used to process the surface.
- Keyway milling cutter: in order to reduce the influence of radial cutting force, the cutter teeth will be designed into two mutually symmetrical cutter teeth, so that the radial forces of the two cutter teeth offset each other during operation, so the keyway with the same width as the tool rotation diameter can be processed at one time. The cutting amount of keyway milling cutter is larger than that of flat end milling cutter.
- Flat end mill: the end face of the flat end milling cutter has a central hole, so it cannot feed directly downward. If the feed depth is too deep, the central hole will resist, so the milling cutter cannot continue to feed, so it is not suitable for cutting keyway.
- Keyway milling cutter: the end face of the keyway milling cutter has no central hole and can feed directly downward. It is equivalent to a drill bit or grooving inserts and can drill a flat bottom hole. It is usually mainly processed in groove and keyway.
- Flat end mill: there are multiple edge bands. The larger the diameter, the more edge bands, so the working efficiency of flat end milling cutter can be improved.
- Keyway milling cutter: generally, there are only two blade belts, which are mainly used for axial feed, like a drill bit.
- Flat end mill: the outer diameter is relatively loose, so the chip removal is also better, which is more suitable for machining surfaces.
- Keyway milling cutter: the outer diameter dimension is relatively precise, because the dimension requirements after keyway processing are relatively high, so it will not be used until the key is matched
Different uses:
- Flat end mill: mainly used for plane milling, groove milling, step surface milling and milling.
- Keyway milling cutter: it is mainly used as grooving inserts for machining keyways. For example, 6mm flat end milling cutter and 6mm slot milling cutter are used to mill slots. 6mm flat end milling cutter will be easier to break, while 6mm keyway milling cutter can easily pass through.
